In Memoriam

Those classmates who are no longer with us will be greatly missed.  We are thankful that we had the opportunity to know them and share part of life's great adventures with them.  Even though they are no longer with us physically, they will always remain an integral part of our group and remain in our thoughts and prayers.

The Tornado. . .One Week Later

After a week of looking out my office window, I can see that our neighborhood will never look the same. Too many big trees are gone! I can see the remains of houses that I never could see at all before the storm. I can even see a house that I didn't even know existed. It was built way back from the main street at the end of a long dirt road and was obviously built before the surrounding area was developed into our subdivision. When all the downed pine needles turn brown and only broken stumps and fallen tree trunks are left, it'll be an ugly sight indeed on our formerly scenic mountain ridge.

I've walked around the neighborhood some over the past few days and have determined that our house marks the limit of the damage. The house next door on the side away from the storm suffered no damage at all, but on the side closer to the storm every house (all the way to the cul-de-sac about a quarter mile downhill) has been damaged or destroyed. There are mountains of debris all the way down the hill.

And then there are the post-tornado sounds.

On this nice sunny Sunday morning it is weirdly annoying to hear so near by the hammering, the nail guns, the chainsaws, and the bulldozers.

Also, I realized just now that my office TV has been tuned to the Weather Channel for the past week. I must have some psychological damage not to have already noticed that every time the cable returns after a few hours off-line, it pops on with the current weather conditions.

I'm worried that a squirrel (or squirrels!) got trapped inside the walls before the contractor blocked off the holes left when our dining room window was sucked out of its frame. In addition to the sounds mentioned above, I hear faint scratching sounds that come from different parts of the house at different times.

And our dogs are barking pretty much non-stop as the work trucks go up and down the street and as the work crews shout back and forth.

We're so used to living in a very quiet neighborhood that my nerves are fraying around the edges.

I think I'll change the channel on the TV to CNN and see if the news will settle me down.

Not very likely! News is nearly always annoying noise.

Judy,

Thanks for keeping everyone updated on people. For those of us who do not live in Mobile, it is a good link to things there.

Wanted to give people a heads up on what is going on in Birmingham. We built a self-storage facility in 06, and I have written a book about this business, called, OUR AMERICAN STUFF, The Heart and Soul of Self Storage, by Marcy Gerhart. If you like Storage Wars, this book is Storage Wars flipped-- the stories behind the units that are being sold.

It can be ordered through Amazon. Would love for everyone to read it, and forgive my couple of references to our Catholic upbringing.
