In Memoriam

In tribute to the members of The Class of '58 who are no longer with us we offer the following:

I know of a man who stood to speak

At the funeral of a friend.

He referred to the dates on his tombstone

From the beginning to the end.

He noted that first came his date of birth

And spoke the following date with tears.

But he said what mattered most of all

Was the dash between the years.

For that dash represents all the time

That he spent alive on earth.

And now only those who loved him

Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own

The carsthe housethe cash.

What matters is how we live and love

And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard

Are there things youd like to change?

For you never know how much time is left

That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough

To consider whats true and real.

And always try to understand

The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger

And show appreciation more.

And love the people in our lives

Like weve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,

And more often wear a smile.

Remembering that this special dash

May last only a little while.

So when your eulogys being read

With your lifes actions to rehash

Would you be proud of the things they say

About how you spent your dash?

Those classmates who are no longer with us will be greatly missed.  We are thankful that we had the opportunity to know them and share part of life's great adventures with them.  Even though they are no longer with us physically, they will always remain an integral part of our group and remain in our thoughts and prayers.

Spouses of class-mates:

Lynn Nelson Long's hubby James has recovered from his heart surgery and is doing well.

Marilyn Johnson's hubby Ray is slowly recovering from his fall and is up to a cane from the walker

My hubby Fred...still in hospital - however, his blood issues seem to be getting better. His cardiac surgery went well. Possibility he'll come home tomorrow on oxygen for an undetermined amount of time.

Now a note from George Gardner. . .

We spent the afternoon at the surgeon's office and having a pre-operation EKG done in Annapolis. Nancy will have surgery on her left arm tomorrow about 3:00 p.m. About a one-inch cube of her elbow (ulna) bone is broken off, and pulled up far out of place by the attached triceps muscle. It will be pulled down, and then pinned and wired into place. Because her hip is also fractured, she will spend one night in the hospital and have some occupational therapy before she is discharged Wednesday evening....if all goes as planned.

Her hip injury, also on her left side, does not require surgery at this point.....but it is serious. However, the surgeon wants her to spend the next two months in a wheel chair.

It looks like our summer fun and travel is about over, except for waiting for follow-up appointments in medical offices.

Despite all this, my Nancy is in her usual good spirits....and still trying to work for her clients.

I will try to provide an up-date tomorrow night. Thanks for your calls and prayers.....gg

George R. Gardner, Ph.D.
